Grade 5 had an amazing couple of weeks! We ended our supply drive for the Philippines with amazing results. In two days, Carmel students brought in bags of items. What was nearly as outstanding was watching the fifth grade work hard to count, organize, box and label all the supplies. It was a team effort and the students pulled together beautifully to get it all done so it could be shipped out on Thursday afternoon. Their effort will make a real difference to those effected by the recent floods in the Philippines.
In Math class, we used the project as an opportunity to chart and graph the results of our efforts over the two days. Students found that in total we collected 1,732 items of clothing, 398 shoes, 613 books, 70 school supplies, 139 different toiletries and 498 toys.
Humanities
In Humanities, we’ve come to the end of our class book, Sign of the Beaver. We are now starting to analyze the book more closely, looking at character traits and some of the major themes of the book. Last week, we also started to do a dictation exercise on Friday. This exercise will help to reinforce sentence rules and increase memorization and listening.
Science
A fruit comes from a flower, but how are the two alike? Students found the leftover flower parts when we took to the Science lab last week and dissected an apple. It was interesting to see a real example of how a simple flower can change into a healthy snack. This week, we finished up life cycles and will begin a unit study of the solar system. Ask your student why Pluto isn’t a planet anymore. They’ll need to come up with the answer for Thursday.

Hebrew for Hebrew Speakers

בלשון סיימנו ובדקנו את חוברת אשכולית "פעיל וסביל".
בהבנת הנקרא למדנו את פרק 11 בחוברת הבנתי. הפרק עוסק בהערכה, הבעת דעה ונימוק.
קראנו את הסיפור "קערת העץ", וביצענו מטלת כתיבה.
פגשנו סבא של תלמידה מכתה ב' ממוצא תימני ולמדנו על קריאה והגיה אתנית שורשית עם דגש על אותיות גרוניות.
פתחנו בפרויקט "סופרים". אנו מתחילים מיורם טהרלב. התלמידים יכינו בבית חומר על כל סופר, ובכתה נקרא ונלמד מיצירותיהם.
